A sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in the works, with director Destin Daniel Cretton set to return. This is according to a report from Deadline, which also confirms that Cretton has reached a multi-year overall deal with Marvel and Hulu's Onyx Collective for more content.
Cretton will write and direct the Shang-Chi sequel. No further details are available yet, but we would expect Simu Liu to return, of course.
As part of the new deal, Cretton will produce new TV content for Marvel to air on Disney+, while his deal with Onyx will bring new content to multiple platforms, including Hulu. This is happening through a new production company that Cretton is setting up called Family Owned.
"Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings," Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said. "We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we're thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can't wait to get started."
Before making Shang-Chi, Cretton directed Short Term 12, which starred Brie Larson, Rami Malek, and Laketih Stanfield. He followed that up with The Glass Castle starring Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.
Shang-Chi has made more than $431 million worldwide to become one of 2021's highest-grossing films globally. Liu will present an award at The Game Awards this week in Los Angeles.
