The Nihon Keizai Shinbun on Wednesday reported that Sega Enterprises has officially announced that it will be developing and publishing game software for the Game Boy Color, Wonderswan, and Neo Geo Pocket. This is the first time Sega has ever developed for a Nintendo platform.
Sega stated that it hopes to increase its market share by developing for the Game Boy Color. The first Sega game coming to the Game Boy Color platform will be Sakura Wars. Sega and Nintendo are currently in negotiations to release the game within 1999.
Although it may seem as though Sega is making the transition from hardware producer to strictly a producer of software, the company stressed that it has no plans of developing or publishing for the PlayStation or the Nintendo 64. The choice to produce games for Nintendo's GBC stems from Sega currently not having a competing handheld unit.
Sega has stated plans to release other classic games for the Game Boy Color after Sakura Wars is released.
