Nick Allen, the League Operations Manger at Riot Games, has announced that they are considering expanding the League of Legends Championship Series to 10 teams. He states that they have a few core reasons for considering this change, namely:
Shortened splits that allow for longer, more exciting playoffs
Consistent schedule with no Super Weeks
Player and team matchup diversity
Playoff optimization
Allen further states that one of the core reasons for considering the expansion is to design a more exciting and action-packed league which has more variety and more matchups. He also acknowledges the problems that Super Weeks bring to the teams competing in the LCS and believes that the 10 team format would allow them to drastically reduce the regular season whilst increasing the time allocation for playoffs.
Allen believes that the 10 team format will also make the playoffs exciting and allow teams that advance to the playoffs to be safe from relegation as "playoffs should be focused on winning and progression, not relegation".
The problems with such a proposed expansion of course are numerous, from the logistics involved into catering to two new extra teams, the additional salary expenditure caused by two new teams and the availability of the talent pool of the North American and European Challenger Series. Allen acknowledges these issues but states "based on the performance of Challenger Series teams and the long term advantages addressed above, we currently believe this is the right direction to take the league."
