Who says you have to cut back on your Quake II playing just because school's in session? Certainly not iDOT.com, Collegestudent.com, and AMD, companies that have announced what they're calling the "Road Kill Gaming tour," a Quake II competition coming to a college campus near you. Well, near you if you happen to be a Texas college student.
All three companies are based in Austin, Texas, where the tour begins this weekend (Sept. 9) at the University of Texas. Other stops on the tour: The University of Houston (Sept. 15), Rice University in Houston (Sept. 16), Texas A&M University (Sept. 17), Southern Methodist University in Dallas (Sept. 22), and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth (Sept. 23).
At each of the schools on the tour, 72 students will compete in Quake II tourneys, playing on iDOT.com's Xtreme Student System. The winner will walk away with a Voodoo II graphics card and US$100 gift certificate.
iDOT.com sells computers over the Internet. Collegestudent.com develops "virtual student communities" for college campuses. iDOT.com and Collegestudent.com have inked a deal that will see iDOT Net storefronts on more than 70 of Collegestudent.com's sites. AMD is helping sponsor the tour as a way of promoting its new K6-2 300MHz processor with 3DNow! the processor that drives iDOT.com's Xtreme Student System.
That system includes a K6-2 300MHz processor with 3DNow!, 64MB SDRAM memory, a 6.4GB IBM Ultra DMA hard drive, a 17-inch monitor, a Matrox 4MB G100 AGP graphics accelerator, a choice of 56Kbps modem or 10/100 LAN card, and a 40X speed CD-ROM. When it is released in mid-October, the system will carry a US$1,299 price tag.
No word on if the competition will branch out to other states but we're sure other colleges would like to have the chance to show their skills outside the classroom
