Phil Harrison, vice president of third-party relations and R&D at Sony Computer Entertainment America, revealed at the ZD Gaming Summit that the PS One will launch in the US on September 19 and will retail for US$99 - the price of the current PlayStation console in the US. Additionally, the format will continue to receive strong developer support, as he confirmed that 208 games, to be released before April 2001, are under development for the platform. Additionally, SCEA does not plan on exerting a tremendous effort in marketing the PS One. According to Harrison, the focus has always been on the launch of the PS2, and in reality the availability of the PS One at retail will be relatively limited, as Sony expects the demand for the miniature platform to exceed supply.
The PS One is technically identical to the current-generation PlayStation console, the only difference being its smaller, portable size and its redesigned look. PS One sales have reached more than 270,000 units thus far in Japan.
