NEC and VideoLogic are moving their new PowerVR Series 2 3D accelerator chip into the arcade as the companies announce a new partnership with Midwest Amusement Corporation. The partnership will create the first PowerVR Series 2-based coin-operated machines.
As you may already know, NEC/VideoLogic's attempt to make a dent in the arcade business is three-fold. Rather than focus on just one gaming market, the companies will focus on arcade machines, consoles, and then on PCs. The hope is that game developers will be able to develop titles for one platform and quickly port them over to an alternative platform, giving developers multiple streams of revenue.
PowerVR hasn't really moved many gamers to its ways because of its performance lags against 3D powerhouses like 3Dfx and nVidia, but its upcoming chips appear to have come up to par with its competition. With its first arcade boxes ready to release to the market, and a big win over 3Dfx as the graphics processor for the highly anticipated Sega Dreamcast, it appears that the PowerVR Series 2 may make some waves in the market.
No word yet on what will be the first arcade gaming title to support the PowerVR Series 2 setup.
