PixelJunk Eden Hands-On
PixelJunk Eden Hands-On-April 2024
Apr 21, 2025 10:27 AM

Sony's PlayStation Day was a chance for the company to boast about selling millions of mainstream games, such as EyeToy and SingStar. But it was also a chance to take a look at some of the other gems in the company's portfolio, such as this intriguing new platform game called PixelJunk Eden. Described as an organic platformer by its creators, the aim is to get your little creature to the top of the screen while bursting stars to collect pollen. It's a strangely addictive experience, and we got to try it out at Sony's recent London preview event.

PixelJunk Eden is one of those "simple to look at but difficult to describe" games that often come out of Japan, meaning that it's a game you need to see in action to understand. However, at its most basic level, it's a platformer collecting game in which you guide a little creature around a series of platforms and branches to collect as much pollen as possible. Your little creature is able to fire a sticky string that can cling to surfaces, and once it's deployed, he can use it to swing around in a circle in an effort to burst the nearby stars. He then needs to circle around again to collect the pollen, which is the key to the game.

Two levels of Eden were on show at the PlayStation event, both of which proved to be quite tricky to come to grips with. You have to aim the trajectory of your sticky string with the left analogue stick and then fire with any of the face buttons. You can rein in the length of your string using the R2 button, something which can also increase the speed of your spinning. However, if you move too quickly, your character won't be able to get a grip on the branches and will fall to the bottom of the screen, which will cost you time in completing the level. The grand prize in the levels we played was a huge star that seemed to be too high for us to reach, and during our time at the demo pod it continued to elude us.

The game is set to launch on the PlayStation Network at the end of June, and although no price has been announced, the representative told us the cost would be comparative to other PSN titles on the market. There will also be remote play possible on the PlayStation Portable, so if you have a networked home and a PSP, you're in for a treat. PixelJunk Eden also promises a disco soundtrack, which should perfectly match the visuals. We'll just have to wait until next month to find out if it's a package worth investing in.
