Area 5, the production company behind Grounded: Making The Last of Us, I Am Street Fighter: 25 Years of Inspiration, and Co-Op, have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Outerlands, a six part documentary series about the people and culture of video games.
The video posted to Kickstarter makes clear that one topic Area 5 aims to tackle is the preservation of video game history, though Area 5's Matt Chandronait told Gamespot that eSports, sex and interactivity, and LGBTQ gamers and communities are other areas of interest.
At the time of writing, Outerlands passed the $80,000 mark on its way to a goal of $210,000, which will fund production, travel costs, and backer rewards. Stretch goals beyond that amount will allow Area 5 to hire freelancers, produce an original soundtrack, and an additional episode.
Area 5's last project of this type, Co-Op, ended in 2010. Chandronait said that the time for Outerlands was right because they saw others, including friends, finding success on Kickstarter. "Of course we were also tied up in trying to keep a new business from getting spawn camped," he said.
If you'd like to see the series produced, you another 28 days to pledge as low as $10 on the Outerlands Kickstarter page.
