New Details on Half-Life for the Dreamcast-April 2024
Apr 21, 2025 4:54 AM

Half-Life for the Dreamcast was shown briefly at Havas Interactive's press event at the Milia trade show. The early demo didn't look noticeably different than the PC version. However, Havas promised that Half-Life for the Dreamcast would feature enhanced special effects, as well as other improvements and additions upon its summer release this year.

Havas also noted that the game would have higher-resolution character models; more realistic artificial intelligence; and never-before-seen Dreamcast exclusive content, which is being designed by Gearbox Software. Gearbox is responsible for Opposing Force, the critically acclaimed expansion pack for Half-Life. The new content will be in addition to the existing Half-Life levels; it is apparently unrelated to the Opposing Force missions. Half-Life for the Dreamcast will also feature new weapons and what Havas called "the best training level ever in a video game."

When GameSpot asked about the Dreamcast Half-Life's multiplayer features, and whether the game would possibly be playable online vs. PC Half-Life players, Havas replied that the game "probably" will not be compatible with the PC version. Furthermore, Havas noted that it still hasn't decided on what sort of multiplayer functionality, if any, will be in the Dreamcast version. Half-Life has sold more than 1.5 million copies to date and has won dozens of awards from gaming publications throughout the world.
