Mutant Football League Kickstarter comes up short
Mutant Football League Kickstarter comes up short-April 2024
Apr 25, 2025 11:38 PM

The Kickstarter campaign for a sequel to Sega Genesis professional football parody game Mutant Football League has ended well short of its funding target.

The campaign--led by creator Michael Mendheim--ended yesterday with $141,821 of its $750,000 goal from 1,105 total backers. The game was scheduled to launch in summer 2015 for the PC, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network, as well as iOS and Android.

"It's been a tough month with a lot of ups and downs but this being my first Kickstarter and all," Mendheim said. "I must say, it's been quite a fascinating experience with a lot of lessons learned."

Mendheim also shared the results of a Mutant Football League survey taken by 353 people. It found that most players would prefer the top-down original style view for the game and that PC was the overwhelming platform of choice. The survey also concluded that fans prefer a cartoony art style over a realistic presentation and that they would like to see a full-season mode.

Despite the Kickstarter campaign's failure, Mendheim said he is optimistic that a new Mutant Football League game will see the light of day sometime in the future.

"We will be back my friends. Not sure how, when...but we're coming," he said. "YOU BETTER BE READY!"

The original Mutant League Football was published by Electronic Arts. Mendheim said when the campaign launched last month that it would have been "terrific" to work with the company again, but made clear that he was instead interested in having "full creative control" over the new game.
