It's been a long time coming, but Furiosa--the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel--is starting to finally take shape with new casting announcements. Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants, Glass), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Infinity War, Ghostbusters), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, The Matrix 4) have been named as co-stars in the upcoming movie, which will dive deeper into Imperator Furiosa's backstory, according to Variety.
The force of nature that is Furiosa was previously played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 movie, and that role will now be taken on by Taylor-Joy. Earlier this year, Theron commented on not returning to the character, calling it: "A tough one to swallow… It's a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I'm so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly."

Now Playing: Immortan Joe Behind The Scenes - Mad Max: Fury Road
Director George Miller has kept the torch alive for continuing the Mad Max saga for many years, saying way back in 2017 there's plenty more story to tell, and has spoken at length on how he's been pondering this universe for "at least 15 years" according to a Deadline story from last year. Miller will co-write, direct, and produce Furiosa.
While a cast shaping up for the upcoming movie is exciting news, The Hollywood Reporter tempers this milestone for the production with a word of caution, noting that while the movie has not yet technically been greenlit, the castings put the movie firmly on the path of finally happening. When it was announced earlier this year that auditions were being held via Skype, it was only natural to be skeptical the movie had legs. But alongside Taylor-Joy, Hemsworth, and Abdul-Mateen II indicate there is very real momentum.
