Lollipop Chainsaw is a third-person hack and slash game that follows the adventures of cheerleader Juliet Starling. Due to a nefarious plot devised by Juliet's classmate Swan, she must rid her school of the undead and defeat the evil zombie rock and roll lords. Joining Juliet in her zombie slaying are sisters Cordelia and Rosalind and the head of her boyfriend Nick, who was decapitated to prevent him from turning into a zombie after being bitten. Just from the description, you can tell that Lollipop Chainsaw is a game that doesn’t take itself seriously. There’s a very distinct B-movie vibe, and it was written by film writer James Gunn, who previously penned comedy horror flick Slither.

Cheerleader training certainly pays off when it comes to being a zombie hunter. Juliet can jump over, stun and chop the heads off the undead before they even know what’s happening. Attacks such as jump kicks look like they’ve been pulled straight out of a cheerleader routine, and Juliet’s yellow pom-poms are used for light attacks. On the Xbox 360 version we played, a tap of the Y button brings out the big guns. Or should we say, the big chainsaw. Stringing together light attacks racks up big points and herds zombies closer to you before you completely destroy them with the chainsaw. There are gruesome finishing moves, pools of blood and decapitations aplenty, and zombies who stumble around missing a limb or two. Dead zombies vanish in a puff of glitter, and leave stars behind that can be used to fill your Star Mode meter, which can then be cashed in to increase your damage output for a limited time. The chainsaw can be modified throughout the game, in some cases even becoming a chainsaw gun, which we are really looking forward to trying out.

Lollipop Chainsaw sure is an over-the-top, tongue in cheek game that adds a light hearted touch to the zombie genre. It's set for release on June 12 in the US and June 15 in Europe for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Sorry PC players, but we’re sure there are other places you can find scantily clad cheerleaders.
