Nintendo's recent financial woes served as fodder for the monologue segment of last night's episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on NBC.
During the segment, host Jimmy Fallon says, "The company was actually doing pretty well but then they hit a banana peel and lost all their coins," presumably referencing the Mario Kart series.
He then rolls a clip of the original Super Mario Bros., altered so that the iconic castle at the end of the level becomes a Cash 4 Gold store.
"Even sadder is he's going to spend all that money on mushrooms," Fallon quips.
Of course, Fallon's remarks are meant only to be funny. Fallon himself is a big fan of video games, and his show hypes games once a year through its annual Video Game Week. His past guests have even included Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.
Things could get awkward if Fils-Aime comes back next summer.
Though Fallon made light of the situation, Nintendo is probably not laughing. The company announced this week that the Wii U has failed to perform to expectation and revealed that a third straight annual loss is on the horizon.
