The first trailer for Malignant has been released. The latest horror movie from Conjuring and Saw director James Wan hits theaters and HBO Max in September.
The plot of Malignant has been shrouded in secrecy since the movie was first announced in 2019, but now we know what the movie is about. Annabelle Wallis (The Mummy) plays a woman who discovers that the violent hallucinations she is experiencing are real visions of murder, happening in real-time. She sets about trying to find out why this is happening and soon discovers it's all linked to something scary in her past. It looks like another stylish and inventive chiller from Wan--check the trailer out below:
Malignant also stars Jake Abel (Supernatural), Jacqueline McKenzie (CSI: Miami), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters Afterlife), and Maddie Hasson (The Finder). It's written by Wan, Akela Cooper (Jupiter's Legacy), and Ingrid Bisu, who also acted in The Nun and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It.
In an interview with IGN, Wan explained that after making the DC blockbuster Aquaman, he was keen to direct a smaller movie before starting on the Aquaman sequel, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, which is now in production. "I wanted to make a movie in between those two giant films," he said. "Just something smaller, more intimate, and really harken back to the style of filmmaking or the kind of films that excited me when I was when much younger, when I was a teen growing up, idolizing filmmakers like De Palma, Argento, and all that.
"I just thought, 'When am I ever going to get the chance to do a film like this ever again? Now is the time for me to use this opportunity to make the kind of movies that I don't think really get made at this level anymore.'"
Malignant will be in theaters and available on HBO Max on September 10.
