GameStop turns developer with Buck and the Coin of Destiny-April 2024
Apr 20, 2025 5:36 PM

GameStop is best known as one of the largest specialty retailers of new and used games in the world, having posted profits of $377 million on revenue of more than $9 billion last year. Now, it appears as if GameStop is making an effort to diversify its offerings by getting in on the game development side of the business.

This week, GameStop announced its first iOS title, Buck and the Coin of Destiny. A side-scrolling platform adventure game, Buck and the Coin of Destiny follows the titular protagonist on his quest to secure the titular goods. The Story mode also features cinematics and in-game achievements and sees Buck traversing randomly generated levels set in environments ranging from forests and caverns to pirate ships.

GameStop is pursuing its coins by more than just selling other companies' wares now. Buck and the Coin of Destiny also includes an Arcade mode, where levels can be played separately in an effort to collect the most coins and earn a high score. These scores are then posted to global leaderboards. GameStop also noted that it plans to update the game with new levels, enemies, and power-ups.

Buck and the Coin of Destiny costs $1 and is available now on the App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The retailer-cum-developer also noted that it will be donating 10 percent of each game purchase to animal rescue and rehabilitation efforts, up to $5,000, through October 31.
