Game of Thrones Prequel Series Details Reveal Possible Show Title-April 2024
Apr 20, 2025 6:50 AM

With reports circulating that one of the Game of Thrones prequels has begun filming, new details about the forthcoming fantasy show have emerged. Entertainment Weekly has published a report filled with facts after talking to author and executive producer Geroge R.R. Martin, revealing a possible title, the creatures in Westeros, and more.

The EW report lists five new details about the Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts (Birdman). The most important is the possible show title. While nothing is set in stone, Martin is lobbying for The Long Night. However, episode three of Game of Thrones' eighth season was also titled The Long Night. To avoid confusion, Martin wouldn't mind a variation: "I heard a suggestion that it could be called The Longest Night, which is a variant I wouldn't mind. That would be pretty good."

Now Playing: Game Of Thrones: Where's Everyone At Season 8's Start?

Elsewhere, Martin admits that the prequel will focus on Westeros when it was 100 kingdoms. "But if you go back further then there are nine kingdoms, and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms--petty kingdoms--and that's the era we're talking about here."

Going back that far would mean dragons aren't present, as the prequel takes place thousands of years prior to Game of Thrones' events and predates the Targaryens. Though giant flying lizards won't command the skies, there are other creatures populating the massively-divided Westeros. "Obviously the White Walkers are here--or as they're called in my books, The Others--and that will be an aspect of it. There are things like direwolves and mammoths," Martin said.

House Lannister wasn't established at this time, which means the Lannister family does not occupy Casterly Rock. There is another family ruling in the Lannister's stead. "It's actually occupied by the Casterlys--for whom it's still named after in the time of Game of Thrones," said Martin. While the Lannisters may not have existed, the Starks--descendants of the First Men--are still around. "The Starks will definitely be there," Martin said.

Though high-profile stars like Watts and Denise Gough (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) will play recurring roles in the prequel, Martin doesn't call anyone a "lead," refraining from using the word because it's an ensemble cast. "As you know for Game of Thrones, we never even nominated anybody for lead actress or lead actor [during awards season] until recently; it was always for supporting [categories] because the show is such an ensemble," Martin told EW. "I think that will be true for this show too. We don't have leads so much as a large ensemble cast."

Currently, the Game of Thrones prequel cast includes Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Jamie Bower (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Toby Regbo (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), and more.
