Finding Dory has been projected to be Pixar's biggest opening yet, and so far, it's on the right track. Variety reports that the Finding Nemo sequel earned $9.2 million on its opening night Thursday, breaking an animated film record. It was previously held by last year's Minions, which had an opening night earning of $6.2 million.
Pixar's latest movie is set to pull in between $115 million and $120 million this weekend, which would put it ahead of Pixar's current best debut of $110.3 million for Toy Story 3. Finding Dory will be in swinging distance of Shrek the Third's opening weekend animated debut record of $121.6 million.
In GameSpot's Finding Dory review, critic Randolph Ramsay said, "The best Pixar movies possess a rare magic; they mix deep emotional resonance with broad laughs. One moment your sides are splitting with laughter, and the next you're on the verge of tears. Finding Dory achieves just that, making for a rare sequel that surpasses the original."
