Fight Night to knock out Wii?
Fight Night to knock out Wii?-April 2024

What we heard: One of the biggest draws of Wii Sports is its boxing game. Allowing players to throw punches by gripping the Wii Nunchuk and Remote in their hands, Wii Boxing has proven a hit among nongamers and gamers alike. Despite crude, cartoonish graphics, the fisticuff-fest has also popped up numerous times on the cultural radar, most notably on the Comedy Central satire The Colbert Report.

The popularity of Wii Boxing's simplistic-but-addictive gameplay likely irked many at Electronic Arts. The megapublisher has spent millions of dollars and man-hours fine-tuning its Fight Night series to re-create real-life boxing via near-photorealistic graphics on next-gen consoles. Today, the recently released PlayStation 3 version of Fight Night Round 3 was given an award for Outstanding Real Time Visuals in a Video Game by the Visual Effects Society. (The game also shipped for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable earlier last year.)

However, given the Wii's mushrooming market share and Electronic Arts' recently announced push to support the platform more robustly, it looks like a compromise is in the making. In an interview with Doghouseboxing.com, EA Sports producer Michael Blank was asked point-blank whether or not a Wii Fight Night was planned.

"We're talking about it right now," Blank told Doghouseboxing.com. "We're contemplating and we definitely feel there are some exciting things we can do with the Fight Night franchise and the Wii. When you play Wii Boxing it is a very simple experience and I think that is what they designed it to be just to let you know that you can throw punches. With Fight Night we have an amazing simulation of boxing and so we need to take those Wii controls and tailor it to what the Fight Night consumer might want to experience. We are looking at it right now and I am sure you will [see] something sometime in the future on the Wii."

The official story: But while Blank went on to promise any Wii Fight Night game would give people "a bit of a workout," EA Sports reps quickly pointed out that no such title has been announced. "Michael was commenting on the fact that they're looking into it," a rep told GameSpot. "As always, our teams are always looking into the next project after they ship their current titles."

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that's its been officially announced. Not bogus that a Fight Night game will eventually arrive on the Wii.
