When you reach the end of Fallout 4's main story, you won't be prevented from continuing to play, developer Bethesda confirmed today.
"To our fans who've asked: Fallout 4 doesn't end when the main story is over and there is no level cap," reads a tweet from Bethesda. "You can keep playing and leveling."

That might sound like a forgone conclusion, but it wasn't the case in the Obsidian-developed Fallout: New Vegas, nor in the last Fallout game that Bethesda developed, Fallout 3. [Spoiler warning.]
In that game, you potentially ended up dying at the story's conclusion. Whether or not you or another character died, your journey came to an end, even if you wanted to continue exploring the wasteland or completing quests. It wasn't until the release of the third DLC pack, Broken Steel, that players could continue past the end of the main story (and advance beyond the initial level cap of 20).
This time around, it sounds as if you won't have to wait for a post-release patch or DLC to continue playing, nor will you have to rely on returning a pre-endgame save, as in New Vegas.
Fallout 4 is due out for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 10. Being able to play beyond the main story should come in handy, as Bethesda has indicated there's potentially more than 400 hours worth of things to do.
