While you can't say EA has been mum on its recent spurt of sports gaming exclusivity deals--namely partnerships with the NFL, ESPN and Arena Football League--the company hasn't gone out of its way to talk about them either. Until now that is. I spoke with EA Sports VP of marketing Todd Sitrin to get his take on what led up to the blockbuster deals and some of his comments surprised me. In our conversation, Sitrin defended his company against critics that called the licensing deals the death of competition in the football space, by saying that EA views not only football games from other publishers as direct competition, but also games in other genres. To Sitrin's way of thinking, anything that takes gamers away from an EA Sports product can be considered a worthy competitor.
What do you think of EA's comments regarding their exclusive licensing deals? Has Sitrin's comments changed your mind one way or the other?
