Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are both R-rated, so it came to surprise many when it was announced that Deadpool 2 would re-release as PG-13. With the film hitting theatres again in a little under two months, Slashfilm sat down with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to discuss what's new and what's different in this PG-13 cut.
According to Wernick, they shot new material and went back into production for the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2. "We definitely shot new stuff," Wernick said. "And recently too." He clarified the process, saying it was less of making a PG-13 movie and more of generating ideas until Ryan Reynolds came up with some "great framing device" that got them excited enough to head back to the studio.

In shooting the new scenes, neither Reese nor Wernick commented on who returned for reshoots.
However, Reese and Wernick are hopeful that fans will return for the PG-13 re-release when it hits theatres. "I think it's not only going to appeal to kids but also to people who love Deadpool," Wernick said. "I think it's subversive enough and fun and creative and something that only Deadpool could do. So I think it's going to be a real joy for not only a whole new audience, but also an audience that has seen and loved the Deadpool movies."
But while there's new material for the PG-13 release of Deadpool 2, don't expect the story to be tampered with. "No, not really, not appreciably," Reese said.
In our Deadpool 2 review, we said, "Reynolds' Wade Wilson is just as charming as ever, in his own twisted way, and Deadpool 2 delivers the laughs, action, and gruesome maimings that fans want."
Deadpool 2's PG-13 cut--currently titled untitled Deadpool movie and rumored to be called The Deadpool Before Christmas--hits theatres on December 21.
