In July, Turbine announced that its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons Online would relaunch under a free-to-play, microtransaction-supported model for PCs beginning August 6. However, such will not be the case, as Turbine has bumped the relaunch date back to September 9 in North America.
Roll for damage. "While we are very pleased with the performance of the game and are excited about the response from the players, we are committed to delivering a high-quality experience," said Turbine executive producer Fernando Paiz. "We feel that more time is needed to deliver on this commitment. As a result, we are delaying our launch to ensure that we can support the massive increase in players that we are expecting and deliver them a free to play experience like none other."
The new subscription model will coincide with the launch of the free update Eberron Unlimited and its new microtransaction store. The update bifurcates DDO's current subscription model, letting those who wish to play the game free purchase add-on packs, items, and other services a la carte through the new DDO Store. Alternatively, gamers can continue to pay a subscription fee, granting them full access to the online game.
The Eberron Unlimited update also boasts a number of new features. The game's level cap will rise to 20, and the add-on also introduces new adventure areas and a revamped combat system. Check out GameSpot's previous coverage for more on Dungeons and Dragons Online.
