During ECTS in London, England, Ion Storm announced that it had reached a "critical milestone" in the development of the first-person action-adventure title, Daikatana.

　　Mikiko and Superfly, the two bot sidekicks that will accompany the game's main character, Hiro, have been added to the game.

　　ION Storm lead programmer Jonathan Wright, aka Nelno, created the bots.

　　"Daikatana's sidekicks are alive and kicking," said Romero. "Superfly is far along now, and Mikiko is on his heels. At this point, they are using lifts, hiding behind corners, and firing at monsters. Thanks to Nelno and his team of programmers, the level and complexity of the AI is excellent. Superfly and Mikiko have multiple goals and tasks and can go back and forth between goals, focusing on the urgent ones first! The sidekicks really set Daikatana apart from the other first-person shooters."

　　Some new details about the game have also been announced. First, Daikatana will have in-game cinematics that will feature cutscenes supporting the game's storyline.

　　After showing off an early version of the game, the Daikatana team has finished building all of the 12 weapons including the Shockwave, the Bolter, and the Ripgun. Daikatana also will include a complete soundtrack of 16 original songs written and created by ex-Information Society vocalist Will Loconto.

　　"The Daikatana team has been going full force with this game from the get-go to push the genre one step further," said Romero. "We are creating an extremely detailed, content-rich, and engaging first-person shooter, jam-packed with monsters, weapons, diverse environments, and two bot sidekicks. A demo will be released in the next few months for everyone to check out. We are aiming to release the game during the first quarter of '99. And when Daikatana does come out - with its sidekicks, its extreme content, and its insane deathmatching - it will be well worth the wait."
