Cyberpunk 2077 will have one expansion and only one expansion, Phantom Liberty, and the company behind the game has now explained why. According to VGC, CD Projekt said during an earnings briefing that it's because the developer used its own Red Engine but plans to shift to Epic's Unreal for future projects.
Business development boss Michal Nowakowski said, "This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or anything of the kind. It's a technological decision to be honest."

Now Playing: How Phantom Liberty Rewrites Cyberpunk 2077's DNA
Phantom Liberty marks CD Projekt Red's final project using the Red Engine, and Nowakowski said, "This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only [expansion for Cyberpunk 2077]."
In March, CD Projekt and Epic announced a multi-year deal for Epic's Unreal Engine. The Witcher 4 is among CD Projekt's upcoming games that will use the engine. The Witcher 4 won't, however, be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, despite CD Projekt's deal with Epic.
The $30 Phantom Liberty expansion, which features Luther actor Idris Elba, releases on September 26. For more, you can read GameSpot's hands-on preview of the expansion.
For comparison, CD Projekt Red's last big game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, had two paid expansions--Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone.
More than 85 game studios are now making games with Unreal Engine 5, including Crystal Dynamics with its new Tomb Raider. For more, check out all the Unreal Engine 5 games so far in the gallery below.
