The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's latest big game, Cyberpunk 2077, is available now, but that's just the beginning for the RPG. The game will be playable on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility (plus PC--read our Cyberpunk 2077 review for details), but the true next-gen editions aren't releasing for some time longer. In fact, it is longer than we anticipated. Just when will that be?

When Does Cyberpunk 2077 Release For PS5 And Xbox Series X|S?

The bespoke editions of Cyberpunk 2077 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are penciled in for 2021 at the soonest. Business development boss Michal Nowakowski said of the new-gen editions, "When it comes to a proper, full-blown next-gen version, that's going to come later."

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Weapons Breakdown

In an update post on January 13, CD Projekt Red said the next-gen versions of the game will arrive around the second half of 2021 if the current roadmap holds true. The update came as part of a larger Q&A and apology that touched on why the game was released in a very unfinished state on consoles.

People playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will see some improvements due to the power of those machines, however. "It will look better on next-generation consoles," CDPR has said. That could extend to improved frame rates and loading times compared with PS4 and Xbox One, although specific enhancements haven't been detailed. The current-gen platforms are having trouble running the game as it exists now, with poor frame rates and muddy visuals. In some cases, it's basically unplayable.

For those playing these versions on the newer systems, the frame rates are more stable. However, it definitely doesn't look like a game made for the new systems. Textures and character models look dated and aren't up to par with the PC version. The games don't resemble the version seen in advertisements. It remains to be seen how much the next-gen versions can rectify this.

Whenever Cyberpunk 2077's PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions are released, they will be available as a free upgrade for those who bought the game already. It'll need to be in the same family, though; if you have the game on PS4, you can upgrade to the PS5 version.

You can buy the game at a variety of stores, but if you want the highest amount of money to go to the developer, you can buy it from CDPR's own digital store, GOG.

Cyberpunk 2077 is not the only game from CDPR getting the next-gen treatment. The company's previous big-seller, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is getting upgrades for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and they will also be free.
