Conker: Live and Uncut Hands-On
Conker: Live and Uncut Hands-On-April 2024
Apr 20, 2025 6:06 AM

We had a chance to check out Conker: Live and Uncut over at the Microsoft E3 booth. The game will essentially be Conker's Bad Fur Day but with some scenes that were cut out of the Nintendo 64 version of the game and some new Xbox Live multiplayer modes. Unfortunately, none of the single-player game was playable on the show floor, but the blitzkrieg multiplayer mode was up and running.

In this particular mode, you can choose to be on one of two teams--the squirrels or the violent stuffed teddy bears. The final game will apparently support different character classes (much like Return to castle Wolfenstein's multiplayer), and there were indeed different classes in the version shown in the demo, but their different abilities had yet to be implemented. Like in any other multiplayer team deathmatch mode, you start the game in your base, where you can stock up on a variety of weapons, ranging from dual Uzis and assault rifles to swords, rocket launchers, and sniper rifles. Interestingly, you can carry more than one weapon at once, so if you happen to run out of ammunition, you can switch over to your backup. In addition, there are some other types of items that are lying around the environment, such a parachute, which can be quite useful if you happen to be in a heavy firefight, since you can just jump right off a ledge and glide to safety.

There are also armor and weapon power-ups in the levels. It's worth mentioning that if you have the katana equipped, then the weapon power-up lets you hold two katanas at once, giving you a greater chance of blocking bullets or slicing an enemy's head off. Vehicles also play a role in the multiplayer component in Conker: Live and Uncut. In the demo map, there were helicopters that players could jump into. Unfortunately, you couldn't actually control the helicopter, but you could take control of the guns and rain fire down on your enemies.

Graphically, the game doesn't really harness the power of the Xbox. The character models (which look as though they were taken directly from the Nintendo 64 version of the game) and the environments have low polygon counts, and many of the textures are pretty washed-out. However, it still has a crisp and vibrant look. We'll have to wait and see if Rare will increase the visual quality of the game before its release.
