Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction has one of the most iconic casts of the 1990s. It's the film that resurrected John Travolta's career, made stars of Samuel L. Jackson and Ving Rhames, and gave Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, and Harvey Keitel some of their most famous roles.

　　But now leaked documents published on Reddit have revealed the various casting choices that Tarantino was considering while the film was in pre-production. While some of the roles went to Tarantino's first choice, many didn't, and some of the possible cast alternatives are fascinating.

　　Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Christopher Walken, and Harvey Keitel all accepted the parts that were written for them. But although it's hard to imagine now, Travolta wasn't Tarantino's first choice for junkie gangster Vincent Vega, the director preferring his Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen.

　　As for the boxer-on-the-run Butch, Bruce Willis wasn't even on the shortlist, the director instead favouring the like of Matt Dillon, Sean Penn, and Nicolas Cage. Equally, Uma Thurman's name is nowhere to be seen for the role of gang boss's wife Mia Wallace--for that role, Madsen's sister Virginia, and Marisa Tomei top the list.

　　Elsewhere, this year's Oscar winner--and star of the Tarantino written True Romance--Patricia Arquette was top choice to play Jody, a role that ultimately went to her sister Rosanna. And while Samuel L. Jackson was Tarantino's second choice for Bible-quoting hitman Jules (after Lawrence Fishburne), it's intriguing to think about how that role might have differed had third choice Eddie Murphy taken the part.
