Boston Acoustics Gives Dolby 5.1 to Gamers
Boston Acoustics Gives Dolby 5.1 to Gamers-April 2024
Apr 30, 2025 2:00 AM

From the first tiny beeps of standard internal speakers to advanced sound technologies using positional audio, computer games and sound have been on a constant evolutionary arc. All the while, PC gamers have become more and more jealous of their audiophile counterparts as Dolby Digital systems have made many PC audio speakers look (and sound) like a cheap set of headphones. Now, for PC gamers looking to get more bone-rattling bass and ear-piercing treble from their machines, Boston Acoustics has introduced the Boston DigitalTheater 6000, one of the first fully integrated Dolby Digital 5.1 surround systems with PC in mind.

Gateway is helping Boston Acoustics introduce the integrated digital sound system using select Gateway PCs and the company's Destination DMC (Digital Media Computer) systems. One interesting aspect of the Boston DigitalTheater 6000 system is that it lacks a receiver; all the processing work is done inside the center channel speaker. A user controls the six-piece system (five speakers and a subwoofer) with an infrared universal remote.

The system will accept S/PDIF digital output from a computer or DVD player along with two analog inputs. As DVD-ROM drives become more commonplace, we're sure to hear from more companies with similar solutions. If you've been yearning to try out the newest DVD games with digital sound, the Boston DigitalTheater 6000 system may be a good way to update your system.

Currently, the system appears to be available only through Gateway (with a new system) and will add US$450 to the cost of your system.
