The results of an Australian study have suggested that playing video games has beneficial effects on young people.

　　Reported on The Conversation, the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre's gaming research group conducted a review of over 200 papers to investigate the link between video game play with positive mental health.

　　According to the research group, results indicated that playing video games "positively influences young people's emotional state, vitality, engagement, competence, and self-acceptance", and it is "associated with higher self-esteem, optimism, resilience, healthy relationships, and social connections and functioning".

　　Key findings reported that non-excessive levels of playing games are associated with "positive emotions and improved mood". In comparison to non-gamers or those who play games excessively, people who play games in moderation "have significantly less depressed mood and higher self-esteem".

　　Also noted was the suggestion that how young gamers play, as well as who they play with, may be more influential to their state of well-being than which games they play.

　　The report also noted the need to identify "what constitutes a healthy or moderate amount of play for people at different stages of their lives".

　　Earlier this year, a report conducted at the University of Queensland found no link between violent games and anti-social behaviour. The debate on the link between violence and gaming has drawn much attention in the past, spurring developers from Gearbox, Epic Games, and Blizzard to speak out on the topic.
