Acclaim Entertainment posted a net loss of US$131.7 million, or $2.36 per diluted share, for the fiscal year 2000 compared with net earnings of US$36 million in the same period last year. Revenues were down to $188.6 million compared with $431 million in fiscal year 1999. The company blamed delays in the release of new titles, lower than anticipated sales of certain games, and a slowdown in sales of current generation consoles for fiscal year net loss. However, the company expects to report a profitable first quarter of 2001 and sees a turnaround in revenue in the upcoming year. To that end, the company currently plans to release 43 games during fiscal 2001 including12 games for the PS2, 12 games for the PS1, 5 games for the Dreamcast, 7 games for the Game Boy Color, and 3 Game Boy Advance games.
"Fiscal 2000 was a difficult, transition year for Acclaim," the company said in a statement. "However, expenses have been sharply reduced and we have an exciting product line-up for fiscal 2001. As the key post-Thanksgiving sell-through reports appear to indicate, our new products are being positively accepted, especially Mary Kate and Ashley's Magical Mystery Mall for Playstation and Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX. Reflecting the benefits of a more tightly focused marketing effort, we anticipate a profitable first quarter, and based on the plan that we have put in place, expect fiscal 2001 as a whole to be a turnaround year.
