Review aggregator Metacritic has said 2013 saw the lowest number of home console titles to get a Metascore of 90 or above since the introduction of the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3, with only seven individual games making the list.
Bringing in PC, mobile, and handheld titles boosts the list of 90+ games to 12. The highest scoring game of 2013 year was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Grand Theft Auto V--which has notched up a Metascore of 97 across Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, making it the highest scoring game on the site since 2010.
Sony's number crunchers will likely be delighted to hear that the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 beat their counterparts the Xbox 360 and Xbox One in the average Metascore, with PS3 releases notching up an average Metascore of 70.1 and PS4 bringing in 73.4.
Xbox One titles, on the other hand, sit with an average of 67.7, and the year’s Xbox 360 titles come in with an average of 66.9.
While the PC’s average Metascore was at 69.1, the platform saw the highest amount of exclusive games--a whopping 45 in total--that aggregated at 75 or higher. The platform with the second highest was the PlayStation 3, with eight.
The Wii U, with Metacritic tracking 53 games released in 2013, received an average Metascore of 72.6. Over on the handhelds, the 3DS average was 69.1, slightly behind the Vita's 71.6.
Joining Grand Theft Auto V in the list of games that scored a 90 or higher in 2013 were The Last of Us, BioShock Infinite, Super Mario 3D World, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Rayman Legends, Fez, Flower, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Spelunky, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and Dota 2.
