The Last Word: January 16-22-November 2024
Nov 17, 2024 8:39 AM

It was a short work week in the US, thanks to the Martin Luther King holiday. However, that didn't stop the remaining days from being jam-packed with major gaming news, including dual Nintendo events in New York and Amsterdam. Those produced a bevy of previews of 3DS games, as well the handheld's price ($250) and launch date (March 27). In New York, GameSpot Live was also on hand to capture many of the games on video along with Nintendo's presentation itself. Several games were also reviewed this week, including the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect.

The 3DS arrives on March 27 for $250. THE LAST WORD: JANUARY 16-22

  NEWS

The biggest news of the week was the pricing and dating of Nintendo's 3DS handheld. However, in close second was a headline many people thought they'd never see--Duke Nukem Forever got a hard release date, and it will be out May 3. Japanese role-playing game fans were thrilled to hear that the rumors about Final Fantasy XIII-2 were true, and Red Dead Redemption got more accolades courtesy of the Interactive Achievement Award nominees. Less welcome news came with the closure of Tron: Evolution developer Propaganda and the looming shuttering of Blur studio Bizarre Creations. Last but not least, the legal battle between Activision and former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella grew more complicated when a court added Electronic Arts as codefendant in the case.

  PREVIEWS

It was a huge week for previews, highlighted by a duo of Nintendo 3DS events in both Amsterdam and New York. Nintendo more or less blew the lid off its upcoming slate of 3DS "launch window" games, resulting in well over a dozen previews from the team posted within a couple hours of the event. Among the highlights were The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. In addition to all the 3DS coverage, GameSpot continued to roll out stories from a recent THQ event, including hands-on impressions of Red Faction: Armageddon and Homefront.

  REVIEWS

This has been one of those strangely quiet weeks that, at least where the reviews team is concerned, is sandwiched between two very busy ones. Last week the team posted reviews of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, LittleBigPlanet 2, and Lost in Shadow, to name but a few. Reviews to look forward to next week, on the other hand, include Breach, DC Universe Online, Dead Space 2, Mindjack, Two Worlds II, and Venetica. Not many updates this week, but hey, if you're playing any of last week's best releases, you're probably not shopping around for more new games just yet anyway. Right?
