Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike Impressions
Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike Impressions-October 2024
Oct 23, 2024 2:31 AM

We recently got a chance to check out a new version of LucasArts' upcoming Star Wars shooter, Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike. This newer version of the game was a slightly tweaked version of the game we were shown back at E3, sporting a few cosmetic and performance improvements.

The demo features one level of the game, Battlefield Hoth, and offers a different take on the battle of Hoth seen in The Empire Strikes Back. To set the stage, the level opens with movie footage from the film showing the beginning of the battle in which Luke's snowspeeder is shot down. You'll take control of Luke and make your way through the level on foot. The level features quite a bit of variety and will keep you busy as you make your way across the snowfield. The first part of the level will require you to scurry up AT-ATs and pitch grenades in their bellies. Once you've taken out enough, you'll mount a tauntaun and continue to make your way to the soon-to-be-squashed rebel base. You'll eventually man an Imperial gun emplacement and fire on incoming troops and walkers. Following your killing spree you'll make your way into the cockpit of your X-Wing and defend the fleeing rebel transports from Imperial bombers before heading out yourself.

The graphics in the game have been refined over what we saw back in May, and they now showcase impressive lighting effects that show off gradients of luminosity and color. The battlefield is detailed and busy with activity in both the foreground and background. You'll see troops, Imperial walkers, and probe droids milling on the ground while transports and fighters buzz the air above the fray. The game's frame rate holds steady despite all the onscreen action, which is impressive. The audio is also strong, with a good amount of audio chatter blending in with sound effects and a rousing soundtrack.

It's not much of a surprise that Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike is shaping up as well as it is. Factor 5 clearly has a handle on the GameCube hardware and is putting its knowledge to good use. Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike is slated to ship this fall for the GameCube. Look for more on the game soon.
