Roku Drops Fox Apps Just Before Super Bowl
Roku Drops Fox Apps Just Before Super Bowl-November 2024
Nov 15, 2024 3:18 PM

Super Bowl Sunday is almost upon us, but Roku users have gotten a sudden notice that they'll need to make other plans for the big game. Roku has alerted costumers that starting today, January 31, it will be removing Fox apps. That includes the Fox Sports app, which will stream the Super Bowl.

GameSpot sister site CNET reports that the note from Roku recommends using other apps like Fubo, YouTube TV, Hulu, or Sling to watch Fox programming. The statement does not specifically mention the Super Bowl, but the timing coincides with a distribution agreement expiring between Fox and Roku, on January 31.

Now Playing: The Best And Worst Super Bowl Commercials Of All Time

"Roku's threat to delete Fox apps from its customers' devices is a naked effort to use its customers as pawns," a Fox spokesperson told CNET. "To be clear, Fox has not asked Roku to remove our apps, and we would prefer Roku continue to make them available without interruption. Roku's tactics are a poorly timed negotiating ploy, fabricating a crisis with no thought for the alarm it generated among its own customers."

If you're a Roku customer, CNET has compiled a list of other options you can use to watch the big game, some even still on Roku itself. Plus, this dispute could resolve at any time, even including by the end of the day. In that case, it will have been a short-lived flare-up without any real impact on customers at all. For more options, check out how to stream Super Bowl 54.

While you wait for the festivities to begin, you can pick up Madden 20 on sale and simulate the big game, or play a special NFL-themed limited-time mode in Fortnite. Or you can just kick back and watch all the big-budget commercials that will air during the game.
