Three years ago, THQ confirmed that it was bringing back the Red Faction franchise after it sat dormant for the better half of a decade. It appears the franchise is going back on the shelf, judging from the publisher's investor conference call today.
The sun might be setting on Red Faction. After citing disappointing sales for Red Faction: Armageddon as a factor in the publisher's $38.4 million quarterly loss, THQ CEO Brian Farrell told investors the publisher had no more plans for the franchise.
"Given that the title now in two successive versions has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way," Farrell said.
Since the franchise returned in 2009, it has seen two retail releases and a downloadable tie-in. The well-received Red Faction: Guerrilla on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 made the series relevant again, enough that THQ prepped a follow-up in Armageddon. That release was supported by a SyFy tie-in movie and the downloadable dual-stick shooter Red Faction: Battlegrounds.
