Mario May Soon Appear in Baseball Game, 2D Game, and Thousand-Year Door Remaster-January 2024

Nintendo registered an incredible turnout with the recently released Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film made by Illumination became the biggest gaming adaptation ever seen in a cinema, despite not-so-glowing reviews from critics. Actually, the Super Mario Bros. Movie is by far the highest-grossing movie released this year, with global box office sales estimated to be around $1.162 billion.

That's nearly twice as much as the second and third best-grossing movies, Full River Red and The Wandering Earth 2, both made in China. The rest of 2023's box office Top 10 sits way below half of the revenue earned by Nintendo's adaptation, including the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, John Wick: Chapter 4, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Creed III, Boonie Bears: Guardian Code, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Scream VI.

That said, it's been a while since Mario starred in a new game, except for the Ubisoft made XCOM-like Rabbids spin-off. Nintendo fans may be itching to get their hands on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, due for release this Friday on the Switch console, but they're also eager to play again as the beloved Italian plumber.

According to Nintendo insider Zippo, the Japanese company is sitting on several finished Mario titles. One should be a sports game themed around baseball, while a new 2D Mario game is also mentioned in the report alongside a remaster of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The latter was a 2004 roleplaying game made by Intelligent Systems for the Nintendo GameCube console, and fans consider it the best game in the Paper Mario series.

Additionally, Mario should once again partner with SEGA's mascotte Sonic for next year's Paris Olympic Games.

With the exception of the latter prediction (a near-certainty), you should take the rumors with a big grain of salt. Zippo has been right in the past, such as when he predicted a multiplatform remaster of Persona 3 Portable and the 2D Metroid game from MercurySteam (which turned out to be Metroid: Dread), but he also missed quite a few rumors.

Unfortunately, with Nintendo rumored to miss next month's traditional season of announcements, fans may have to wait until Nintendo Live in September to get more information about the upcoming lineup of games for the Switch console, Mario titles included.
