Faith in Mirror's Edge Catalyst will be displayed "more mature" than in the first Mirror's Edge. According DICE's senior concept artist, players need to be curious about who Faith really is.
During a DICE art panel at the National Museum in Stockholm, senior concept artist Per Haagensen, talked about portraying Faith in the upcoming Mirror's Edge Catalyst.
Faith is the main character in Catalyst, and was introduced in the original Mirror's Edge from 2008. Catalyst reboots the franchise for the next generation with advanced visuals and an all-new origin story for Faith.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst was announced back in 2013 alongside a Mirror's Edge teaser trailer, which can be watched below.
In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, you will experience the rise of Faith, a daring Runner who uncovers a hidden truth within the walls of the city of Glass. Through her journey, Faith will explore every corner of the city, from the highest, most pristine skyscrapers, to the dark and gritty tunnels that lie beneath. Players will need to master the environment, using their momentum and timing their combat to fight the oppression of the ruling elite, uncovering the dark secrets behind the city’s beautiful façade. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst gives players the freedom to explore the entire city, discovering a variety of new activities, like ‘Dash’, races from point A to B, environmental puzzles and story missions to complete at their own pace.
DICE wants to make the player curious about who Faith really is.
“When I set out to sculpt her for the Key Art, aside from the realistic aspects of her appearance, more than anything it was to convey the pose with enough action, tension, and interest to make the audience curious about who this person is".
Haagensen adds that for Catalyst, the team wanted Faith to look "more mature" than she did in the first game. "She also needs to appear more mature than in the first game, so there was some work on getting a focused look on her face, maybe even some concern about the situation she is in", the concept artist said during the Panel.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst is releasing in May 2016 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
