This morning, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware shared the announcement Elden Ring fans had been waiting for: an expansion called Shadow of the Erdtree is currently in development.
No further details were provided at this time, though fans are already speculating that the character seen on horseback in the promotional image could be Miquella of the Haligtree, an Empyrean demigod and the elder twin brother of Malenia, one of the most challenging bosses in the base game.
Based on the wording, though, it doesn't look like Shadow of the Erdtree will be coming out any time soon. So far, the only new content added to the game by FromSoftware was the PvP modes introduced in December's Colosseum update, such as United Combat, Combat Ordeal, and Duel Mode. In Wccftech's hands-on, though, Francesco De Meo said the Colosseums would be nothing more than a decent diversion for most players.
The base game garnered entirely different acclaim. Elden Ring was rated with a perfect score here on Wccftech; here's an excerpt from the review:
I tried hard to find any faults in Elden Ring, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find any outside of some technical issues that the developers could fix via patches. I firmly believe that perfection doesn't exist and that it is always possible to improve, but I really couldn't think of anything that Elden Ring could have done better. As such, the game wholly deserves a perfect score, an honor I would have given only to a couple of other modern games, not only for its extremely high quality but also for what it accomplished with its open world and for how it will surely influence video games as a whole in the future.
The game went on to receive the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2022 and the D.I.C.E. Awards 2023, among many others. It also won over Wccftech staff and community in our dedicated polls, snatching the Best RPG and Best Overall prizes.
Elden Ring also became by far the best-selling game ever made by FromSoftware, handily beating the likes of Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Just last week, Bandai Namco and the developers proudly announced that the open world action RPG had sold over 20 million units in its first year.
