Don't Get Rid Of Your 3DS Yet-October 2024
Oct 31, 2024 3:21 PM

3DS may have been overshadowed by the Switch since Nintendo's hybrid console released last year, but there are still a number of great titles in store for the dual-screen handheld, and another one has now joined that list. Atlus has announced it is bringing the final 3DS installment in the Etrian Odyssey series, Etrian Odyssey Nexus, to the West in early 2019.

Like previous entries in the franchise, Etrian Odyssey Nexus is a first-person dungeon crawler in which players use the system's touch screen to map out a winding labyrinth as they explore it. This installment takes players to the archipelago of Lemuria, where they must create a party to explore labyrinths and uncover the mysteries of the World Tree Yggdrasil.

Billed as the "definitive Etrian Odyssey experience," Nexus features the largest selection of characters and classes to date, with 19 different jobs drawn from throughout the series' history, plus the brand-new Hero class. The game also features four different difficulty settings that players can swap between, as well as an optional auto-mapping feature that automatically charts out dungeons as you explore.

Etrian Odyssey Nexus launches on February 5, 2019. The series has been consistently well-regarded since it originally debuted on DS in 2007. The latest installment, Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth, launched in 2017 and earned an 8/10 from GameSpot. In our Etrian Odyssey V review, critic Heidi Kemps wrote, "By focusing instead on small improvements to systems and ideas that already worked well, Etrian Odyssey 5 is a long and challenging RPG that sucks you in and leaves you determined to see what lies above."

Beyond Etrian Odyssey Nexus, 3DS owners still have remakes of Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story to look forward to in the near future. Atlus also recently announced another Etrian Odyssey-style game, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, will launch in Japan this November, although the publisher has yet to confirm if that game will also make its way to the West as its predecessor did.
